Car finance redress: worked calculator examples

These made-up examples show how changing your loan details can change an estimate. They are not real customer payments or a guide to what most people will receive.

Each example assumes the agreement qualifies, all monthly payments were made as planned, and there was no large final payment or early repayment. The dealer is assumed to have been able to change the interest rate to earn commission, without explaining this properly. Figures are calculated to 19 October 2026; a later calculation date may change them.

Example 1: a £10,000 loan

Estimated redress: £842.38. The calculator combines an estimate of extra interest paid with the commission amount, includes compensatory interest, and applies the relevant limits. Load Example 1 in the calculator →

Example 2: the same loan with higher commission

Keep all the details above, but change commission to £2,500.

Estimated redress: £3,359.47. With the arrangement assumed in this example, the higher commission leads to a different calculation based on commission plus interest. A high commission amount alone does not prove you qualify for that calculation. Load Example 2 in the calculator →

Example 3: an older loan

Estimated redress: £2,380.06. This example uses different loan details and an earlier agreement date. It shows why one person's result cannot predict another's. Load Example 3 in the calculator →

Try your own figures

Use your agreement's amount of credit, APR and term. Replace the commission assumption only when you have a figure or are deliberately exploring a scenario. Read about how estimates work and their limitations, especially for PCP balloons, irregular payments and early settlement. The lender's records and required calculation can produce a different amount.
